The formation and defense of the young Ukrainian state cannot be imagined without Evhen Konovalets and his Sich Riflemen Corps. As a defender of the Ukrainian National Republic, a monument to Evhen Konovalets should embody the symbol of statehood – the trident. We propose using the trident as the foundation of the design, creating a modern sculpture based on its outline. One of the vertical planes of the monument would feature a portrait of Evhen Konovalets.
Analyzing the site for the monument, it became clear that it was essential for Konovalets Street to visually culminate with the monument. This visual connection determined the location where the monument should be installed.
The monument itself is a trident formed by polished stainless steel planes. On one of these planes, the portrait of Evhen Konovalets is cut out. Inside the trident, there is an inclined plane made of corten steel, symbolizing the passage of time. In contrast, the stainless steel represents the relevance of the ideas that Evhen Konovalets stood for.
The main concept for designing the public space was to utilize the difference in elevation between the sidewalk of Bandera Street (311.50 meters) and the public space in front of the first building of Lviv Polytechnic (313.20 meters). Between the sidewalk and the Lviv Polytechnic public area lies a green zone with large trees. The project proposes cutting the ground to the level of the sidewalk, creating a cozy public space open to Bandera Street yet separated from the Polytechnic's territory by a retaining wall with a height difference of up to 1.5 meters. Retaining walls ensure that the ground level around the trees remains unchanged, preserving all the trees. Along the retaining walls, floating wooden benches are installed. Part of the retaining walls is clad in the same polished stainless steel as the monument, giving the entire composition a cohesive look.
We believe it is crucial that the design of the Konovalets monument integrates not only the sculpture itself but also the entire surrounding area, creating a unified and meaningful space.
